Temporary changes to sickness absence self-certification

The rules on self-certification have changed to release some pressure from GPs who are focused on booster jabs.  The previous rules allowed an employee to self-certify for the first 7 days of absence after which further absence will require a Fit Note (GP certificate of fitness) to enable SSP to be paid by the employer to the employee.

Government has now relaxed the rules so that employees can self-certify for up to 28 days (including non-working days such as weekends and bank holidays).  This is a short-term measure for absences between 10 December 2021 and on or before 26 January 2022, but there is a possibility that it could be extended further.  This means that during this specific period employees can be on sickness absence without needing GP supporting evidence and employers will be required to pay SSP.  If the absence is COVID related it is possible to make a claim for two week’s absence.  Employers can also request individuals to obtains Online Isolation Notes (online certification) if the employee is advised to self-isolate.
